FCL vs LCL break-even: cartons being stuffed into a shipping container

FCL vs LCL Break-Even: How to Work It Out for Your Own Lane

By Airlift Logistics team6 November 20265 min read

Airlift Logistics recommends working out your own FCL vs LCL break-even rather than using a fixed volume. Divide the all-in FCL cost by the all-in LCL cost per CBM. That gives the volume where a full container starts to cost less.

Why rules of thumb fail

You will often read that FCL becomes cheaper at around 12 to 15 CBM. It can be true, and it can be well off, because the answer changes with the lane, the season and each side's local charges. Your own two quotes give a better answer than any general rule.

The formula

Worked example

Round numbers to show the maths, not real rates
8 CBM by LCL
720FCL costs 1,500
12 CBM by LCL
1,080FCL costs 1,500
16 CBM by LCL
1,440FCL costs 1,500
17 CBM by LCL
1,530FCL now costs less
25 CBM by LCL
2,250FCL saves 750

Assumes FCL at 1,500 all-in for a 20ft container, and LCL at 90 per CBM all-in. Break-even: 1,500 ÷ 90 = 16.7 CBM.

Our view: FCL is often worth it just before break-even

The formula only counts freight. FCL also means one set of hands stuffing the container, no waiting for others' cargo, and less handling at each end. For fragile or high-value goods, we would look at FCL from about 20% below break-even. For stock that is not urgent and packs well, LCL can still make sense right up to it.

Check that it fits

  • A 20ft container has about 33 CBM inside, but usable space is lower once packed.
  • Heavy cargo may reach the weight limit first, especially in a 20ft.
  • LCL is charged on 1 CBM or 1,000 kg, whichever is higher, so dense cargo is priced on weight.
  • Try the container calculator with your carton sizes.

Costs the quote may not show

Ask about , which only apply when containers overstay their free time. Ask too whether the delivery order and destination handling are included, since LCL destination charges vary widely. See how we handle both on our sea freight in Dubai page.

Quick answers

At what volume does FCL become cheaper than LCL?

FCL becomes cheaper once LCL total cost passes the FCL total. Divide the all-in FCL price by the all-in LCL price per CBM to find that point for your lane. Rules of thumb of 12 to 15 CBM are only a starting point, because rates and local charges differ by route and season.

  • Use quotes for the same route and week.
  • Include destination charges on both options.

Is LCL slower than FCL?

LCL is usually slower than FCL door to door. Cargo waits to be consolidated with other shipments at origin, then must be separated at destination before release. The ocean sailing can take the same time, but those extra steps add days. If your deadline is tight, compare the full schedule rather than only the sailing time.

  • Ask for the consolidation cut-off date.
  • Ask when cargo will be available at destination.
